Battlefield 3: Armored Kill

Battlefield 3 Lead Designer Gustav Halling clarifies some exciting new details regarding the upcoming, vehicle-based expansion pack, Armored kill.

Great news for console players! “All AK maps have 5 flags on consoles,” according to Halling’s Twitter account. Playing 5-Flag Wake Island in the Back to Karkand expansion pack will probably give you a good idea as to the type of gameplay you can expect in Armored Kill.

Halling also clarified that “there are no urban maps in AK.” So, you can most likely forget maps like Sharqi Peninsula, even though it was somewhat vehicle-heavy, and say hello to wide-open maps like Caspian Border, Operation Firestorm and Kahrg Island.

Halling’s co-worker and Lead Designer Niklas Fegraeus recently had some interesting things to say about Armored Kill’s maps, which you can read up on right here, including more details on everyone’s most anticipated new feature/vehicle, the AC-130 gunship.

Speaking of the AC-130, we recently learned that it will not be pilot-able and will, instead, fly “on-rails.” To some, this came as a disappointment as many Battlefield fans were excited to be able to pilot such a devastating aircraft. Some still hope for change and also accuse consoles of being the factor holding back the DICE team from being able to make it happen. However, Halling made it clear, “I am not changing that, it’s not because of consoles. My design makes it balanced without making the weapons weak.”

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the most important information about the Battlefield 3: Armored Kill DLC from a recent EA Origin live chat with Niklas Fegraeus.

General:

Five new vehicles will be available

Each new vehicle will have its own career of unlocks.

Four maps will be available – all really big and with diverse environments and themes.

Bandar Desert is the largest map in Battlefield history (demonstrated in the live chat).

It will also have a very high flight ceiling.

No comment if more cinematic events will be returning, though players will see some “cool stuff.”

Armored Kill will introduced the new game mode Tank Superiority. Details are being left for later.

AC-130:

To use the AC-130, you need to capture the base that harbours it.
Once captured, you can spawn into the gunner position or simply use it as a mobile spawn point.

It will respawn like any other normal vehicle. Though if the opposing enemy team has captured the base, it will spawn for them instead.

It will have two positions: the 25mm auto-cannon and the 120mm “big” cannon.

You can spawn and paradrop from the AC-130 even if all the gunner positions are occupied.

Gunners on the AC-130 do have the option to deploy flares if they are being locked onto by other vehicles or weapons.

Players can also jump into a 360 degree AA turret.

The AC-130 will serve two roles: suppressing ground units or controlling the air space.

It flies on it’s own path and is not very mobile. Use friendly fighter jets to protect it.

Tank Destroyer:

A new tank destroyer class of vehicles is being introduced.
It is basically a faster moving tank with lots of firepower, although only lightly armored.

ATV:

2-man ATV quad bikes will return (as in Bad Company 2) which will allow for driver and gunner positions.

AA Vehicles:

There will be no new AT or AA infantry weaponry, but players can take control both mobile artillery and tank destroyers.

Mobile AA is a very vulnerable vehicle yet powerful. Its best defense other than teamwork is good positioning.

It’s meant to be challenging but rewarding – not just a point and click weapon.

Parece que vamos voltar a ter os ATV´s voadores coisa que no BC2 era bem fixe porque permitia em alguns mapas fazer voos bem jeitosos.
Parece-me que nos primeiros tempos a base em que vamos ter acesso ao AC130 vai ser a mais concorrida da história do BF, eu devo andar a ganhar pontos pelas outras e de avião a ver se destruo o AC130.

E agora a pergunta que toda a gente está a fazer será que eu no meu tanquezinho consigo abater o AC130 com o canhão principal do tanque, esta deve ser linda.

Não deves conseguir, eles dizem que o teto do jogo será mais elevado, e como é automático deve ser por padrões, mas era bem jogado.

LOL... Basicamente vamos voltar á essência genética do BF, com mapas grandes e mts veículos inlcuindo alguns novos (vê na lista). Serão os maiores mapas da história de qualquer jogo da série Battlefield.

A expansão irá incluir 6 novos veículos: tanques leves, dois veículos de arilharia móveis, ATMs e o grande e maravilhoso AC-130 (rumor ou ñ tb acho que teremos motor-bikes )
Nem todos os modos de jogo estarão disponíveis na nova expansão, e tb não vamos ter nenhuma arma nova, apenas veículos e um novo modo de jogo chamado "Tank Superiority".

curiosidade: O AC-130, terá lugar apenas para dois atiradores, visto que será um veículo não tripulado. Para o conseguires vai ser preciso capturar uma das bandeiras deste vasto mapa, então, depois, irás sobrevoar o inimigo lançando flares para ñ morreres e matando tudo o que se mova.

Este mapa vai ser brutal, so espero e que nao seja chato e com poucos jogadores, espero que aumentem o numero de jogadores nestes mapas grandes.

ya isso nao vai acontecer, simplesmente a PS n aguenta o que é uma pena, mas pronto é assim a vida

No resistance 2 dava para jogar com 60 jogadores no mesmo mapa e como o jogo estava organizado nunca havia confusão, só não conseguem por mais gente a jogar nas consolas porque não estão interessados em puxar pela cabeça.

hmmm , n sei. o bf3 puxa muito pela ps e pelos servidores, pelo menos é o que ouço nos youtubes, que se fores pela quantidade de gente o MAG era uma loucura pelo que ouvi dizer

ah optimo, que eu tenho que admitir que me esqueço do ABC de vez em quando LOL

A situação do AC-130 vai ser mt boa, mas nas primeiras semanas vai ser um caos na spawn base do AC, ambiente ideal para o sniper! BOOM HEADSHOT!!

Estes mapas vão ser jeitosos, já andava com saudades da neve e de um mapa no deserto em condições.

ainda falta tanto tempo...

eu n sei...apesar de adorar tanques e de ser engenheiro, como quem joga comigo sabe, parece me que esses mapas, com o limite de jogadores que tem para a PS3 e com a mania que o pessoal tem de ir para o BF3 jogar COD, n sei não...cheira me que nos vai deixar mal, mas pronto eu sou um pessimista XD

Armored Kill is also the proud home of the “biggest map in Battlefieldhistory,” as well as the exciting new game mode, Tank Superiority.

What is Tank Superiority?

Will Armored Kill maps have separate rotations from the base game maps?

What happens if I join a server that has a mix of base game maps and expansion pack maps, and I don’t have that particular expansion?

You will still be able to join the server, but when a map from that expansion pack loads, you will be disconnected from the server.

DICE Senior Environment Artist, Andrew Hamilton gives BF3 players a look at the hard work that he has done for the upcoming Armored Kill Map, Alborz Mountains.

"With Armored Kill having a strong focus on the environment, we wanted to truly hand craft each and every square inch of their kilometres of natural landscape for players to explore, which was no easy feat. While we created convincing and believable environments on all four levels through thoughtful placement of natural elements – understanding how mountains are formed, where water flows down their surfaces carrying sediment and deposits at their base – we didn’t want it to all simply feel like window dressing. We want players to feel immersed in these environments. We set out to achieve this through a combined effort of art, audio and effects."

He said in his latest post,

"I for one have been eager to release some truly large maps, so being able to really push what we are capable of sprinkling across such large expanses has been a fun challenge, not only in terms of density and detail of the environment, but also its believability and uniqueness."

Some of the key things when creating the maps of Armored Kill included:

- Push the quality from up close macro details right out to far distant mountains.

- Make the levels feel even more expansive and immerse players in a living world.

- Tune the terrain creation process to further utilise its unique features.

Acho q de papel só mesmo a matéria prima - árvore "completa"!

Eugostava de saber era qual o tamanho que estes mapas vão ter, com tanta coisa deve ser para ai uns 2 GB, mais 1 GB para a actualização, vai ser a noite toda a fazer download.

ñ te esqueças q vamos ter o maior mapa de toda a história do BF... e os restantes são de tamanho médio por isso o tamanho do patch vai ser monstruoso
